Athletes From Carolina Duke Game
If you’re a Duke fan, chances are you know about the Blue Devils’ historic rivalry with UNC Chapel Hill. That rivalry is known as the Battle of the Blues or the Tobacco Road Showdown.
Saturday’s meeting of the two is an important one as both teams look to get back on track with a win. But this game, which will be played in the Dean Dome, is a little different than other meetings between the two.
Tyrese Proctor
Australian young gun Tyrese Proctor reclassified to enter college one year earlier than expected and he made a huge impact for the Blue Devils this season. He started 34 of 36 games while averaging 9.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists.
He’s been a consistent contributor during Duke’s nine-game winning streak. He’s a reliable option for junior point guard Jeremy Roach and has provided the team with solid depth in the backcourt as well.
Proctor, averaging 10.2 points per game during the streak, has also been a key member of a strong man-to-man defense that has forced turnovers and held opponents to 42% shooting from the field. He’s been especially effective when he’s locked down older, more prolific offensive players such as Virginia’s Kihei Clark, Virginia Tech’s Hunter Cattoor and N.C. State’s Terquavion Smith.
Jeremy Roach
Jeremy Roach is an athlete from carolina duke game who is famous for playing basketball. He is known for his quick decision-making abilities and impressive ball-handling skills.
Originally from Leesburg, Virginia, he has been playing basketball since he was a child. He started with his family’s AAU team, a local youth club and eventually represented the United States in a pair of FIBA World Cup tournaments.
He was a high school star, averaging 11.1 and 15.2 points during his freshman and sophomore years, respectively. He then committed to Duke University.
A promising ACC guard, Roach helped the Blue Devils win an ACC championship in 2021-22 and earned an invitation to the prestigious ACC All-Star Game. He has also been named a team captain for the 2022-23 season.
Roach has a good attitude, good ball-handling skills and the ability to find teammates. He is solidly built and will play either point guard position.
Kyle Filipowski
Duke’s Kyle Filipowski, who led the Blue Devils in scoring and rebounding last season, has announced that he will return to school for his sophomore season. He is the final member of this year’s ACC championship team to make a stay-or-go pro decision and could have a long career as a college player.
He’s expected to be a late first-round pick in the draft, and he will be one of the key pieces for the Blue Devils under new head coach Jon Scheyer. He will have a strong group of teammates along with Tyrese Proctor and Mark Mitchell, who both announced their intent to come back next season.
The Blue Devils are favored to win this year’s rivalry game against North Carolina, but it won’t be easy against a Tar Heels team that is playing much better than it was in the regular season. It’s also not a given that the teams will be on the same page.
Derek Lively
When Derek Lively II was growing up, he spent time at the local YMCA, practicing shots from the corner. He would roll the ball to himself a million times, and when it didn’t go in, he’d shoot until it did.
Then he went to Team Final, an AAU program outside Philadelphia, and started taking the game more seriously. He was uncoordinated and skinny, he says, but after just one season with the club, he was on the national stage as a top-ranked prospect in the 2022 class and a Duke Blue Devil.
After a freshman campaign that was up and down, he closed it out on a high note as a leader at Duke. He was a key player in the ACC tournament, where the Blue Devils won their first-ever championship, and helped lead them to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32.
Lively is leaving college early to enter the NBA Draft. He’s a great shot blocker with big-time defensive upside, and he could be an early-round pick for a team that has a need at center.
