How Much to Tip Your Nail Salon
Getting a manicure is a great way to relax and de-stress. But figuring out how much to tip your nail tech can be confusing.
Before you tip, consider your nail techās level of service and whether or not they went above and beyond for you. And be sure to leave a review online!
Akiko Nails
Located on the Lower East Side, Akiko Nails is a hip salon focused on growing the popularity of nail art using artists trained in the special Japanese manicure technique. They offer a range of services, from gel, to regular polish and extensions. The salon also boasts a cool interior design featuring LED signs, rose gold furnishings, and furry pillows.
They’re also known for their nail art and select design, which aficionados say can rival Luxe Nails in Hong Kong, Vanity Projects in New York, and M&M Studio in Los Angeles. Their top of the line offerings include the New York Deluxe, which pampers your digits with a refreshing scrub, hydrating hand soak, detox hand mask, nail shaping and cuticle care, and a hot towel and massage treatment.
Paintbox
Located on the Lower East Side, this Japanese-inspired salon is the ultimate spot for trending nail art. Its nail technicians are specially trained with a Japanese technique for intricate designs.
During your mani, you can view contemporary video art displayed behind the counter. The salon is more of a studio than a spa, with 18 manicure stations and a lookbook of seasonal designs and colors that are inspired by runway and editorial trends.
The Quantel Paintbox is an iconic piece of 1980ās retro-tech that has yet to receive any official recognition in the broadcast world, but a new interest is brewing. Thanks to Mark Nias in England and Adrian Wilson in NY, a rare working Paintbox is now available for purchase on the US market.
Tenoverten
Tenoverten, a New York-based brand launched in 2010, is committed to making nail care a healthier experience. Its products are made without the most harmful chemicals found in conventional nail polishes, and are guaranteed vegan and cruelty-free.
To support this mission, the brand encourages customers to recycle unused polishes and works with manufacturers who prioritize sustainability. The brand also offers a selection of 38 unique nail colors.
Each color is named after a street in tenovertenās hometown of New York, and is inspired by the character of that neighborhood. The polishes are smooth and streak-free, allowing for easy application. Theyāre also 8-free, meaning they donāt contain dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, or triphenyl phosphate.
Glosslab
Glosslab is a hygiene-first, waterless, and membership based nail studio that opened its first location in Manhattanās Flatiron district. The brand is founded by Rachel Apfel Glass, who cut her ties with a finance career to pursue the idea of creating a salon focused on cleanliness, efficiency, and membership.
She developed a future-forward studio featuring technology-enhanced services and performance-based products at the forefront of beauty and nail trends including best-in-class, long-lasting vegan polish, gel and non-toxic polishes. GLOSSLAB also practices top-notch safety procedures, from online booking to cashless payments and contactless check-in and checkout.
Chillhouse
Chillhouse is a modern day spa with a cafe, massage rooms, and of course, manicures. Founded by Cyndi Ramirez-Fulton, the founder of Taste the Style and a partner in The Garret bar, it’s a one-of-a-kind establishment that makes self-care simple.
Whether youāre in the mood for a caffeine fix or some serious self-care, this downtown spot is a must. Its coffee shop section serves up matcha lattes and organic wines.
But donāt fret if you canāt make it to this spot for some salon-worthy manis: They have a line of pop-on nails that you can use at home and still get those same results. These nails, called Chill Tips, are easy to apply and feature trendy, colorful designs.
